Millet varieties of Proagro are setting trends in hybrid pearl millet production in Rajasthan. The products of Proagro Seed Company Private Ltd, a company of Bayer CropScience, are now market leaders.

Clive Pegg, Managing Director of Proagro, said, "Our millet hybrids, Proagro 9444, 9555 and 9533, are widely recognised as market leaders in our Rajasthan sales zone, which includes the Rajasthan state, adjoining parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

The Proagro millet hybrids have consistently given high yields and excellent returns on investment to farmers," Dr. Suresh Gupta, Head, Breeding, said.

He added, "Proagro 9444 is widely adaptable to adverse conditions with high tillering capacity per plant. Proagro's hybrids occupy a market share of 42 per cent (as per the year 2005 survey) and are on their way to capture 50 per cent share of the market in 2006 in Rajasthan."

The company has four hybrids in the tall segment, Proagro 9444, 9555, 9533 and 7701, and another four in the semi-dwarf segment, Proagro 9330, 9332, 9333 and 9340.

India contributes up to 55 per cent of the world's pearl millet acreage, of which the Rajasthan state alone accounts for more than 25 per cent of the country's area in productivity and creating wealth for the farming population in Rajasthan.

In Rajasthan, Proagro 9444 is particularly popular with the farming community for its high yields in both grain and fodder. Proagro 9555 is a new, tall hybrid introduced in the current season. The speciality of this hybrid is its tolerance to Downy Mildew and lodging. This year, two new introductions are Proagro 9533 and Proagro 9333.

Proagro 9533 is also a tall hybrid, tolerant to high temperatures and to downy mildew disease, maturing in 75 to 80 days, at least a week earlier compared to other existing hybrids in the market. Proagro 9333 is a new hybrid in the semi-dwarf segment and will be introduced in Kharif (wet season) this year.
