India's national flag carrier Air India too has failed to promote country's tourism prospects compared to other national carriers in other geographies.
"It is most unfortunate that the centre and state governments have not realised the importance of travel and tourism industry. It is vital this sector is given the importance that it so rightly deserves. The story of the sector is, unfortunately, of huge potential and missed opportunities. We need to change this urgently and develop a vibrant and globally relevant travel and tourism sector, which will be attractive to foreign and domestic travellers for the benefit of overall economy, " Oberoi said during the annual general meeting here on Tuesday.

Foreign visitor arrivals remained low in India. According to the annual report, in 2011-12 India only had 6.3 million visitors as compared to China with 58 million, Thailand 19 million and Turkey 33 million.
"In several other countries, the national flag carriers such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines have been pivotal in promoting their respective countries. Unfortunately, Air India does not have enough flights to many important European and Asian destinations. Air India must transform itself into global carrier of repute and develop a strategy so that India becomes a key destination," he added.
Expressing his disappointment over the infrastructure growth in the country the chairman said, " Sadly, not enough is being done in this regard."
