Hoping to cash in on retail sector boom, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is all set to open four Reliance Fresh outlets in Dehradun. |
After Dehradun, the company plans to open more such outlets in four other districts of Uttarakhand, officials here said. |
While bulk of the employment would be directly under Reliance Retail, the operation would also throw open multiple avenues for indirect employment. |
Most of the infrastructure facilities for these outlets in Dehra Dun are in final stages. But the officials here are not giving a date for the inauguration of the outlets. |
Meanwhile, it is not yet clear whether the top companies like Reliance would procure vegetables and fruits directly from farmers in the state as the government seems to be in no mood to enact the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act. Companies like Reliance, ITC and Bharati have evinced interest in contract farming in the state for which the APMC bill is understood to be mandatory. |
Moreover, a comprehensive Agriculture Act to boost agri-production and disallow any non-agriculture activities on the farmlands is also being brought in Uttarakhand. |
Meanwhile, After Uttar Pradesh, RIL is now facing the wrath of local vegetable vendors and wholesalers in Uttarakhand for venturing into retail. Vegetable mandis and vendors in Uttarakhand today remained closed protesting against what they called "invasion" of Reliance into their daily business. |
Traders under the aegis of Uttarakhand Vegetable and Trade Association submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister B C Khanduri calling for a ban on the retail business. |
