Riding on record refining margins, Reliance Industries today announced a 42 per cent growth in net profit at Rs 2,481 crore for the second quarter of the current financial year. Its net income went up by 28.16 per cent to Rs 20,717 crore from Rs 16,164 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Profit before tax stood at Rs 2,908 crore at the end of the second quarter""37.29 per cent higher than Rs 2,118 crore posted in the second quarter of the previous year. Earnings per share (EPS) were Rs 17.8 at the end of the period against Rs 12.5 in the corresponding period of last year.

But the performance of the company failed to impress the stock market. The Reliance stock closed at Rs 751.20 today, 1.6 per cent lower than yesterday's closing of Rs 763.85. Going by Indian accounting standards, RIL posted an even higher growth in net profit -- 50 per cent -- in the first half of the current financial year at Rs 4,791 crore from Rs 3,189 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Under the US GAAP, at the end of the first half of the current year, the RIL net profit stood at $1,160 million (Rs 5,110 crore). The disparity was on account of foreign exchange differences and consolidation of subsidiaries and associates, Reliance Industries said in a statement.

Its net income rose 27 per cent during the period from Rs 33,610 crore to Rs 42,777 crore. Exports were Rs 15,716 crore in the first half of the year, 51 per cent higher than Rs 10,036 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The company's operating profit, before other income, jumped 22 per cent to Rs 7,278 crore from Rs 5,975 crore. Its production of oil, gas and petrochemicals, including toll conversion, grew 4 per cent to 6.54 million tonnes during the first half of the year from 6.29 million.

The statement said the increase in sales in the first half reflected the impact of a 23 per cent rise in the company's product-selling price and 4 per cent growth in sales volume. However, its net operating margin, during the period, was lower at 18.9 per cent.
