Reliance Power Ltd (RPL) today announced it has commissioned the second 300 Megawatt (Mw) unit of its Butibori power plant at Nagpur in Maharashtra. This will help ease power availability for industrial units and distribution utilities in the power-starved state.

The first 300 Mw unit of the project was commissioned in August this year. With the coming of the second unit on-stream, the total operating capacity of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) subsidiary has reached 1,840 Mw.

"We are on track to emerge as the largest integrated private sector power and resource company. Reliance Power's flagship project at Sasan is also progressing at a rapid pace and we expect to commission the first 600 Mw unit of the Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) in near future," J P Chalasani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company said.

According to the company, the 600 Mw capacity at Butibori has been built using 275 acre of land, making it a compact sized project. The company plans to utilize entire ash generated at the plant in its own cement plant.

Reliance Power has captive coal reserves of an estimated around 2 billion tonne (BT). The company is also developing three coal mines in Indonesia and is executing coal bed methane (CBM)-based generation capacity.
