Leading retail companies""Foodworld Supermarkets, Giant Wholesale Club, Trinethra Super Retail, and Nilgiris Franchise Division"" have mandated all suppliers to use the universal EAN barcodes on products being supplied by September. |
This move is expected to reduce labeling cost. The companies have also announced that they would charge penalty on suppliers in case of not conforming to this requirement. |

"Organised retailing in India is still at a nascent stage, especially compared with developed countries in terms of adoption of international best practices and international standards in their supply chains. One key area relates to use of internationally accepted EAN.UCC barcode standards for unique and universal identification of products and consignments in the supply chain. Coupled with this is the need for aligning information on new product introductions, price changes and returnables among suppliers and buyers to reduce errors in ordering, dispatching, and invoicing," said Ravi Mathur, chief executive officer, EAN India. |

EAN India is a non-profit organisation set up by various industry bodies and the ministry of commerce for administering and promoting the use of global supply chain standards in the country. It is an affiliate of EAN International, Brussels. |

"Foodworld expects to save over Rs 40 lakh in direct labeling costs by switching to scanning of EAN barcodes on all consumer products. It will facilitate demand forecasting, consumption-based production scheduling and replenishment benefiting all of us," added K Radhakrishnan, vice-president, Foodworld. |
