A new purified terephthalic acid plant at Hazira is expected to come up later this year.

The third and last phase of expansion of Reliance Industries' (RIL) polyester facility at Hazira and Patalganga will be over within a few weeks.

Post-expansion, the company's polyester manufacturing capacity will increase by 5 lakh tonne to 2 million tonne per annum. This is part of the company's Rs 3,000 crore plan to consolidate its polyester and fibre intermediates business.

Besides, a new purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant at Hazira is expected to come up later this year. With a capacity of 6.3 million tonne a year, the facility would take the Mukesh Ambani-owned company's consolidated PTA capacity to 1.9 million tonne.

The Rs 99,000 crore company is also said to be planning to build up new capacities for value-added differentiated polyesters and bringing about greater innovation. Of late, the company has launched a specialised fibre and yarn in the domestic market.

A few of them like bioactive fibre has been sourced from the research and development centre of its acquired German polyester player Trevira. The product is marketed under the Trevira Bioactive brand.

"It is a niche product used for manufacturing sportswear. The fibre is sold to big sports brands in Europe and the US," said a Reliance official.

The company has also launched carpet and non-woven fibres produced at its research and development centres in Patalganga. Last year, RIL had set up its new research centre, Reliance Fibre Application Centre.

After the acquisition of Trevira, RIL became the world's largest producer of polyester fibre and yarn. The German company is known for specialsed fibres and its portfolio includes Trevira Micro, Trevira Xpand and Trevira CS.

"Two years after the acquisition, the company's chain has been simplified and there is better synergy between the German and Indian units," said the official. The synergy includes movement of scientists between the R&D centres situated in the two countries.
