With competition intensifying and the average price of mobile phones falling in the country, the top 10 companies in this market collectively reported a five per cent decline in 2011-12 revenue.
Including Nokia, Samsung, Micromax and others, the top 10 registered a revenue of Rs 31,215 crore, against Rs 33,031 crore a year before, according to an annual survey by Voice & Data. It says a fall in feature phones’ sales, as well as lower average selling values (ASVs), was responsible.
Nokia remained number one in the handset business, with revenue of Rs 11,925 crore, despite an eight per cent drop from 2010-11. The Finnish company lost market share in the smartphones and multi-media segment to Samsung, HTC and Apple, among others. Nokia caters to all mobile segments and saw its absence in the Android ecosystem dent its performance, the report said. Nokia ended 2011-12 with a market share of 38.2 per cent.
South Korea’s Samsung saw revenue grow 38 per cent to Rs 7,891 crore. With a 25.3 per cent market share, thanks to a rich product portfolio based on Windows, Android and Bada operating systems, it remained the number two player.
Homegrown handset company Micromax, with revenue of Rs 1,978 crore, was ranked third. It, however, recorded a 13 per cent fall, and had a market share of 6.3 per cent. Another Indian company to post revenue over Rs 1,000 crore was Karbonn, which had a 32 per cent growth in revenue, to emerge fifth, with a market share of 4.3 per cent.

Among global companies, Canadian BlackBerry maker Research In Motion dropped 25 per cent, to post revenue of Rs 1,460 crore. At number four, BlackBerry had a market share of 4.7 per cent, on the back of entry-level smart phones. Taiwanese handset maker HTC saw the highest growth, of 105 per cent, among all the brands surveyed. Its revenue more than doubled to Rs 923 crore, from Rs 450 crore, to garner a three per cent market share. Others in the top 10 list are Spice Telecom (Rs 790 crore), LG (Rs 780 crore), Huawei (Rs 760 crore) and G’Five (Rs 670 crore).
