Rohit Nandan, joint secretary in the civil aviation ministry, has been appointed as the chairman and managing director of Air India for a three-year term. Nandan, 54, is a 1982-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from Uttar Pradesh

“The President is pleased to appoint Rohit Nandan, IAS, as chairman and managing director of Air India Limited on deputation for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier, from the date of taking over charge,” said a release from the civil aviation ministry.

Nandan is not new to aviation. During his stint with the UP civil aviation department, he had let out runways to pilot training schools, which helped revenues in the state’s funds. He was one of 10 IAS officers selected by the Cabinet secretary to monitor and expedite the completion of venues in the run-up to last year’s Commonwealth Games.

Nandan’s job at the helm will not be easy. He would have to look into a solution to the personnel integration issues between the erstwhile AI and IA and compensation for the delay in delivery of Boeing Dreamliner 787 aircraft will also be on his priority list.
