Construction major L&T Company has been contracted to build a 10-km-long fly-over in Panipat, the fast coming up industrial town.

To be build at an estimated cost of over Rs 300 crore, the fly-over will be one of the longest in the country, said Panipat Deputy Commissioner Mehtab Singh.

According to Singh, the survey work for the construction of the proposed flyover has been started. The new fly-over would be built on the Delhi-Chandigarh National Highway No 1, the deputy commissioner said. The national highway passes through the historic city of Panipat.

The construction of the fly-over was expected to be complete in the next three years, the official added.

In recent years, there has been a big increase in the number of vehicles passing through the city.

Keeping in view the magnitude of traffic, which was affecting the general life along the national highway, it was necessary to construct such a fly-over, the deputy commissioner said. The new fly-over will help in resolving to a great extent the traffic woes of the residents of the town.

The state government would soon enter into an agreement with the L&T for the construction of the flyover, he added.

According to the official, the fly-over will be constructed on the pattern of flyovers in the national capital. "Every care will be taken to maintain the flow of traffic during the construction of the fly-over so that the people might not feel the inconvenience," Singh said.

The historic town of Panipat is also famous for its blankets and other handloom products that are exported to all over the country and to even foreign countries.

The state government is in the process of chalking out a programme to develop the historic town as an industrial area and attractive investment destination.

"The state government is planning to develop the town in a manner that it will attract all those units, which cannot be located in Gurgaon and Faridabad," said a Haryana government official.
