Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of the Maharatna company Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), has clocked its best ever April-August performance since its inception.

The steel unit produced 970,527 tonnes of hot metal, 912,092 tonnes of crude steel and 885,386 tonnes of saleable steel during April-August period of the current fiscal, thereby registering growth of 4.5 per cent, 3.9 per cent and 3.4 per cent respectively over the corresponding period of 2011-12.

Besides, sinter production at 1.4 million tonnes during this period was also the best ever performance since inception of the steel plant. The success was replicated in the rolling mill zone too. By producing 377,926 tonnes of HR (hot rolled) coils for sale, 11990 tonnes of spiral weld pipes and 28,141 tonnes of cold rolled non-oriented (CRNO) steel, RSP bettered its performance over last year by 14.5 per cent, 11.1 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively.

The steel plant fulfilled the monthly APP (annual production plan) targets fixed for many major areas like hot metal, HR coil as well as total steel and saleable steel during the month.

In August, RSP’s hot strip mill produced 98,935 tonnes of HR coil for sale, which is the best performance for any month since inception. In the techno-economics parameters like coke rate (526 kg per tonne of hot metal), coal to hot metal ratio (0.958) and energy consumption (6.790 giga calorie per tonne of crude steel), the steel plant recorded its best August performance.

Another notable feature was the inauguration of the new ore bedding and blending complex of RSP by C S Verma, SAIL chairman on August 11.
