Consumer electronics major Samsung India will invest $12.5 million in 2005 to beef up its R&D operations in the country.

The R&D centre, based in Noida, works on both software and hardware development for Samsung's digital and analog products worldwide. Samsung plans to take up the head count at the R&D centre from 200 to 300 by the end of the year.

"With a greater emphasis on R&D we would be able to deliver superior products at competitive prices," said Ravinder Zutshi, director (sales), Samsung India.

According to him, the company is considering production of music systems, DVD players, and projection TVs, that are currently being imported, in India.

Samsung, which is the second largest CTV seller in the country with a market share of nearly 14.5 per cent, is targeting sales of two million units in 2005.

"Last year, we sold 1.45 million CTVs in India. This year, we plan to cross two million units, with bulk of the sales coming from the flat screen segment," said Neeraj Sethi, general manager, (audio visual sales).

The high-margin flat TVs is the fastest growing segment in consumer electronics. Samsung expects flat TVs to account for nearly 90 per cent of its CTV sales in 2005 against the industry average of 40 per cent.

"Within the flat TV segment, the sales of 29 inches TVs is growing very fast. We expect this category to contribute 15 per cent to the overall CTV sales this year,' said Sethi.

The company today also launched a range of CTVs having the DNIE technology priced between Rs 6,890 to Rs 20,990.

"Our R&D has helped us to bring the price of a 21-inch TV with DNIE for below Rs 9000 which is a great value proposition for the consumers," said Zutshi.

The company today also launched new models of plasma, LCD and projection TVs to boost the premium range. It also introduced three digital video camcorders in the price range of Rs 25,990 to Rs 69,990.
