Steel City Securities Limited (SCSL) and Steel City Commodities Private Limited (SCCPL) have jointly registered a 116 per cent growth in turnover during the first half of the current fiscal as compared to the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

"Especially in commodities trading, we have achieved an abnormal growth of about 655 per cent during this period. As a result, our trading volumes have increased significantly," G Raja Gopal Reddy, executive director of SCSL and SCCPL, told Business Standard.

The turnover of both SCSL and SCCPL rose to Rs 20,059 crore in the first half of the current fiscal, as compared to Rs 9,282.50 crore during the corresponding previous period, posting a growth of about 116 per cent.

SCCPL's trading turnover touched Rs 6,059.45 crore during the first half of the current fiscal as compared to only Rs 802.28 crore during the first half of the last fiscal, posting a growth of about 655 per cent.

"In order to create awareness among the agro producers, we conducted about 172 seminars across the state, mostly in villages in which many big farmers participated in commodities trading, resulting in our trading turnover swelling to Rs 6,059.45 crore in just six months as compared to Rs 2,247.27 crore during last year," he said.

"Because of the increase in the turnover, our margins also improved. Our total net profits during the last fiscal were only Rs 30 lakh. This year, SCCPL is expecting a net margin of Rs 2.5 crore," he added.

SCSL's trading volumes on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) increased by Rs 5,520 crore during this period. During the last fiscal, SCSL's trading turnover was Rs 8,480 crore whereas it was Rs 13,999.50 crore during the first half of 2005-06, posting a growth of about 65 per cent, Gopal Reddy said. This year, SCSL is expecting net profits of about Rs 5 crore.

"SCSL is currently operating 207 branches across Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. We will add 12-15 more branches in these states by the end of this fiscal," he said.
