Even as Coal India Limited (CIL) had missed to achieve the target, its flagship entity South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) had surpassed the target it was given for coal production in 2011-12.

The SECL, the largest coal producing company in the country, had produced 113.75 Million Tonnes of coal in the fiscal 2011-12 as against the target of 112 MT. The CIL had revised the target of SECL when coal crises hit following heavy rains and regulatory obstacles in projects.

“The company managed to achieve the revised target and surpass the actual target it was given for the financial year 2011-12,” Chairman-cum-Managing Director of SECL Ashok Kumar Sinha said. The coal production was about 1.5 per cent more than the actual target it was given, he added.

SECL, which is one of the eight subsidiaries of CIL, had been given as target to produce 118 MT of coal in the fiscal 2012-13. “With the cooperation and efforts from all quarters, we are hopeful to easily achieve the target given for the current financial year,” Sinha said.

The feat of SECL added significance as none of the CIL entities could achieve the target. This resulted in CIL failing to meet the revised target it had set for coal production in the year when crises hit hard. The CIL’s coal production in 2011-12 was 435.84 million tonnes (MT) as against the revised target of 447 MT.

The shortfall in the coal production of CIL had in fact perplexed the power producers who are already facing supply crunch. But the SECL claimed to have ensured that its buyers got uninterrupted supply that too matching the demand.

“The SECL had been supplying cent percent coal demanded by the power projects,” Sinha said, adding that in 2011-12, the coal supply to the power producers had increased by nearly five per cent.

SECL that has 92 mines including 70 Under Grounds (UG), 21, Open Cast (OC) and one mixed mine, had mining operations in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The company has been making profits since its inception and has been awarded Mini Ratna status in 2007.
