Siemens bags Rs 325 cr airport order

Most products, systems and solutions to come from its own portfolio

The Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) group of Siemens, Germany and Siemens India have bagged contracts worth Rs 325 crore from Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL).
 
The contract is to be executed in phases. Siemens I&S division and Siemens India will take up the work related to building two runways, 120 aircraft stands, two terminal buildings that can handle more than 40 million passengers and cargo capacity upto one million tons per year.
 
Siemens India has been awarded the engineering and procurement and commissioning contract (EPC) covering the complete project management and turnkey electrification, including design & engineering, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and training for electrical systems such as substations, flood-lighting, terminal building and boundary wall electrification, building management systems, passenger conveying systems.
 
Of this contract, Siemens Ltd's I&S division will get orders worth Rs 175 crore while Siemens AG Euros 28.3 million (approximately Rs 150 crore).
 
"The scope of the Siemens AG contract includes the supply of the airport?s other technical systems for the airfield lighting, aerobridges, baggage handling, security, IT, telecommunication and public address, as also medium voltage distribution substations, diesel generators and 11 KV cables. The contracts are to be executed within 30 months," said J Schubert, managing director, Siemens.
 
Emphasising the importance of this contract, O P Narula, director, Siemens said, "This is a prestigious order for both Siemens in India and Germany, as it marks a beginning for us in India in the field of airports."
 
"Most of the products, systems and solutions will come from our own portfolio, from a single source. This advantage, combined with our project management skills, engineering competencies and ability to integrate diverse and complex technologies, makes this project truly unique. With our vast international experience and proven expertise in this area, we are confident of implementing this very challenging project in time, thereby contributing towards India?s infrastructure development," he added.
 
The airport, scheduled to be operational by April 2008, is being built on private-public partnership basis. The project is on "build-own-operate-transfer" basis and attained financial closure recently.
 
A joint venture company, BIAL, in which the private promoters, Siemens (40 per cent), Zurich Airport (17 per cent) and Larsen & Toubro (17 per cent), hold majority (74 per cent) stake, while the balance is shared by the Government of Karnataka (through KSIIDC) and Government of India (through Airports Authority of India) who hold 13 per cent stake each.
