The government's plan to set up a network of highways across the country has opened up a fresh avenue for investments -- highway traffic management systems. The first company off the block is Siemens. It has already executed one such contract and has earmarked Rs 100 crore for similar initiatives.

The company has executed a Rs 17.5 crore order for installation of the India's first highway traffic management system (HTMS) on the National Highway No:8 between Delhi and Jaipur on the 86 kms stretch between Kotputli and Amer.

"This is a new business segment that has opened up. We have a certain capability and competence in this area. The National Highways Authority of India has planned the installation of similar systems on further highway stretches. We are eyeing these opportunities," said Ajit Advani, executive vice-president, Siemens said.

Further, the regional and state highway authorities and the private road operators are expected to install such systems.

"These systems will go along way in making India's highways as safe as in any part of the world," Advani added.
