Engineering major Siemens will set up a greenfield steam turbine factory at Vadodara, Gujarat, with an investment of around Rs 30 crore.

The project will come on stream by December 2006. This will be the company's 15th manufacturing facility in India, providing direct employment to about 220 people.

Spread over an area of 6,500 sq mt, the new factory will manufacture single-stage and multi-stage steam turbines for industrial applications.

"All the components of steam turbines up to 45 mw will be manufactured locally. In addition, this new facility will also manufacture key components for steam turbines up to 150 mw and provide after sales and repairs services," said J Schubert, managing director, Siemens.

The announcement coincides with the company's celebration of its 50th year of operations in India. "We expect a turnover of Rs 500 crore in two-three years," said EJ Ferdinand, vice-president, power generation - industrial applications, Siemens.

The company plans to double the manufacturing capacity of the plant in the second phase. The factory will cater to the domestic market of below-150 mw turbines and supply turbine components to Siemens manufacturing facilities in Europe.
