Silk Air, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, will launch its nonstop service between Visakhapatnam and Singapore on October 28.

This will be the second international flight service from Visakhapatnam airport. Air India already operates an international flight from here to Dubai via Hyderabad.

Recently, the Airports Authority of India agreed to sanction additional staff to handle international flights at the airport, and accordingly the Navy, which controls the air traffic here, decided to extend the airport timings from 8 pm to 11 pm for three days in a week.

The new services would be operated with Airbus A319 and A320. Flights would operate three times in a week, departing on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, SilkAir chief executive Leslie Thng said.

Visakhapatnam will be SilkAir’s eighth destination in India, he added.

Besides, SriLankan Airlines is also planning to operate nonstop flights from Vizag to Colombo. Recently, a three-member delegation from the airline visited the city. Air India too is planning to begin services to Singapore, Malaysia and Bangkok from here, D Varada Reddy, president, Air Travellers Association of India, told Business Standard.

He also said there was a lot of demand for starting international cargo flight service from Vizag airport.
