Fresh violence broke out in Singur this afternoon when a group of villagers, who were a part of a local farmland protection committee, tried to destroy the fencing at the Tata project site. According to reports from Singur, social activist Anuradha Talwar was stopped by the police when she tried to march towards the Tata Motors project site.Police officials at Singur said nearly 100 villagers under the banner of 'Singur Krishi Jomi Rakha Committee' assembled at Bajemelia village and marched towards the site, where construction work is underway.The villagers, who were lead by committee convenor Becharam Manna and local Trinamool Congress (TC) leader Samiran Mukherjee, were stopped by the police leading to scuffles.As the agitators became violent, police lathicharged and fired teargas shells to disperse them.Trinamool sources claimed that seven agitators, including Manna, were injured but police denied it.Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee is stepping up pressure against West Bengal's two controversial projects, the Tata car factory in Singur and the special economic zone (SEZ) in Nandigram. Mamata is also expected to make a stop in Singur after her rally in Nandigram.The Singur protests, in fact, came ahead of the Trinamool chief's first public rally after her hunger strike in December. The rally is being held in Nandigram where Indonesia's Salim Group is developing a SEZ.
