Hydro power producer Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVNL) today posted nearly 29% jump in profit at Rs 411.10 crore for the three months ended September.

The company had a profit of Rs Rs 319.59 crore in the same period a year ago.

SJVN, a joint venture of the government of India and the government of Himachal Pradesh, recorded net sales of Rs 622.02 crore in the 2011 September quarter as compared to Rs 525.39 crore in the year-ago period.

Currently, the company operates the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Electric Power Station.

The company produced 3,225.55 million units of electricity in the September quarter.

"Generation [of power] during the quarter ended September 30 was higher as compared to the previous corresponding quarter since the plant was shutdown only for five days during the quarter as against 22 days during the corresponding quarter of previous year...," the filing said.

Among others, SJVN is constructing the 412 MW Rampur hydro power project in Himachal Pradesh and three hydro projects (252 MW Devsari, 60 MW Naitwar Mori and 51 MW Jakhol Sankri) in Uttarakhand.

"As the generation of hydro electric power is dependent on the flow of water which varies during various periods of the year, the result for the quarter may not be comparable with the forthcoming quarters," the filing noted.

Shares of the company rose over 1% to close at Rs 22.60 on the BSE.
