Steel secretary takes over as SAIL chairman

Govt denies extension to SAIL CMD C S Verma, whose five-year tenure ended on Wednesday

Rakesh Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Steel took the additional charge of Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Chairman on Thursday.

The government has denied an extension to SAIL Chairman & Managing Director C S Verma, whose five-year tenure ended on Wednesday.

Verma was appointed SAIL Chairman & Managing Director in June 2010 by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of the time. Since he still had four years before turning 60, the age for superannuation, he was eligible for an extension.

The government order clarified yesterday only that the steel secretary would officiate as chairman of the company till a full-time chairman is appointed.

Singh, a 1978 officer of Punjab cadre, has earlier served on the boards of banks, insurance companies and financial institutions.

Singh is a Graduate in Science and a Post Graduate in History from the University of Allahabad. He also holds a Post Graduate Degree in Economic and Social Sciences from the University of Manchester.
