The state IT department has asked the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for setting up of Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) incubation facility as part of its Electronics Hardware Incubation Program for the benefit of new hardware units.

"We have asked the STPI-Bhubaneswar to prepare and furnish a DPR for setting up of the incubation facility which is required for obtaining the government approval and concurrence of the finance department," said an official.

Officials say, the incubation centre will have plug and play facilities to support the new IT companies.

The state government has taken host of measures - preparation of road map for the hardware industry in the state, characterisation lab for chip testing, etc, to attract investment in the ESDM sector.

The IT department has roped in the India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA), the premier trade body representing the Indian (ESDM) industry, to prepare DPR for establishment of Electronic Manufacturing cluster at the proposed Info-valley.

IESA is also entrusted to prepare the roadmap for growth of ESDM industry for the state. Similarly, STPI will set up a characterisation lab in PPP (public-private partnership) model at International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Bhubaneswar in association with the state government.

As per the estimates, the demand for electronics in India was $45 billion in 2008-09 and is expected to touch $400 billion by 2020.

The Union government's National Policy on Electronics has set a target to attract an investment of around $100 billion and create around 28 million jobs by 2020.

The report will be prepared soon, an STPI official said.
