Strike at Saurashtra Chemicals division

Soda ash production at Saurashtra Chemicals' plant at Porbandar in Saurashtra, which was recently acquired by the Nirma group, has come to complete halt since Tuesday.
 
The workers and the management have been at loggerheads for some time over retrenchment issue.
 
The tiff between the workers and management started with sacking of four workers. The four unions active in the Saurashtra Chemicals plant at Porbandar have convened an emergency meeting of the working committee and is going to organise a joint committee of all the four unions on Thursday to decide on further action.
 
The company, however, has termed the strike illegal. It has claimed that the production has not been affected and the level has been maintained.
 
The company produces 860 MT of soda ash, sodium carbonate etc against the total capacity of 1200 mt.
