Workers on strike at Suzuki Powertrain India Ptd (SPIL) and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) vacated factory premises this morning, following an order from the Haryana government.
The workers at the two companies have been on strike since October 7, in support of their colleagues at Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant. “We have decided to vacate the plant, according to the government order, but we will continue our strike,” said Suzuki Motorcycle India Employees Union president, Anil Kumar.
Workers at SPIL too, were leaving the factory they had occupied since October 7. “We are vacating the plant premises under compulsion, as the police has threatened action. But we will continue to be on strike outside the plant,” said Suzuki Powertrain India Employees Union president, Sube Singh Yadav.
Adopting a tough stand, the Haryana government had, on Thursday, declared the strike by workers at the three Suzuki Motor Corp entities in India illegal. It had also initiated a process to cancel the registration of unions at SPIL and SMIPL. Last evening, striking workers at Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant had vacated the premises, following an order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Maruti Suzuki India workers have been on a strike, demanding the reinstatement of about 1,200 casual workers. They are also demanding that 44 permanent workers, suspended after a settlement agreement was signed on October 1 to end a 33-day-long standoff, be taken back. Yesterday, Maruti Suzuki India had sacked 25 more workers at its Manesar plant. The firm had, on October 9, dismissed 10 workers and five trainees, while another 10 were suspended.
Meanwhile, the company said there was no production at the Manesar plant. The main plant at Gurgaon was also shut, as part of a two-day closure due to constraints of engines and transmission supply from SPIL.
