Sujana Energy Limited (SE), part of the Hyderabad-based Sujana Group, has entered into a product and technology partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), under the latter’s flagship programme ‘Lighting a Billion Lives’ (LaBL).

This technology partnership between SE and TERI will provide clean and safe lighting through new models of solar lanterns for the LaBL initiative that aims to bring light into the lives of one billion rural people by replacing kerosene and paraffin lanterns with solar lighting devices.

The new-generation solar lanterns, to be manufactured by Sujana Energy apart from TERI’s other partners, will have features including bright white LED light, low-power consumption, and up to 7 hours of run time of up to 50,000 hours of LED life.

“We are confident to make a difference by bringing in scale to the LaBL programme, while we explore how to complement our respective strengths in TERI's various other initiatives panning solar solutions for telecom towers and decentralised power generation. We together are looking forward to extend this partnership to other geographies like Africa in the near future,” Hari Kiran Chereddi, managing director of Sujana Energy, stated in a press release on Monday.

According to TERI, each solar lantern saves 40-60 litres of kerosene per year that translates to Rs 100 billion burned each year in kerosene and wick lamps.
