Suzlon Energy, a supplier of wind turbines, today announced its fourth consecutive order from gas utility company GAIL. The order consists of 11 units of Suzlon's S88-2.1 megawatt wind turbines, totalling to 23.1 megawatts. This is to be commissioned in the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka by the end of financial year 2011-12.

Though Pune-based Suzlon Energy did not divulge the value of the order, industry sources said that as a thumb rule, the cost of a wind turbine with a generation capacity of one megawatt is around Rs 6 crore.

Suzlon Energy has frequently received orders from GAIL to supply wind turbines. The latest order is the fourth received by Suzlon Energy from GAIL since the first project was commissioned in March, 2010.

While the first project was of 4.5-MW capacity, the second had generation potential of 14.7 MW and is currently under execution in Gujarat. Last month, Suzlon got another order for turbines with a cumulative capacity of 25.5 MW, to be commissioned in Karnataka.

The first two orders from GAIL are located in Gujarat. A part of these projects is meant for GAIL's captive power requirement, with the remaining for power sales to the respective local power distribution utilities.

Tulsi Tanti, Founder, Chairman and Managing Director of Suzlon Group said: "This order underscores our position as a partner-of-choice for large wind investors in India. With the strength of our future development pipeline, our customised end-to-end offerings and our long term service capabilities, we are the best positioned to take advantage of the rapid growth of the Indian wind market."

At 1200 hours, Suzlon's stocks were trading 3% lower at Rs 23.10 per share on BSE.
