Taiwan-based TPV Technology, a $5-billion firm manufacturing computer monitors, is thinking of setting up a Rs 500-crore manufacturing unit in India in the next couple of years. It is also considering tying up with Microsoft Entertainment & Devices Division for supplying its monitors for Xbox 360.

"TPV has seven manufacturing facilities spread across mainland China, Taiwan, Eastern Europe and Brazil. The next manufacturing unit is likely to be in India. This is likely to happen in a couple of years when we reach a sales figure of 4-5 million monitors in India," said Mukesh Gupta, country head for TPV Technology.

In 2005, TPV sold 1.2 million monitors in India and is targeting to increase the number to 1.5 million this year. It has 10 models of computer monitors in the Indian market and plans to launch five more in the next two months. These would be in the high-end segment. Last year, TPV's revenues were about Rs 500 crore in India and is expected to grow to Rs 700 crore this year.

With regard to the probable choice of location for the manufacturing unit, Gupta said, "It makes sense to be in south. Cities such as Vishakapatnam and Chennai are preferable because of their proximity to ports." The unit is likely to take an investment of about Rs 500 crore.

Meanwhile, the company is also in preliminary talks with Microsoft Entertainment & Devices Division.
