Mobile service provider Tata Indicom is shifting to the 10-digit numbering system, which is similar to that followed by the GSM mobile operators.

For the Maharashtra circle, the transition will take effect from midnight of June 10 while for the other seven circles that includes Mumbai, it will be effected over the next 10 days.

The change is in line with the national numbering plan for mobiles mandated by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

The number series will change from the existing format of 'STD code + telephone number' to the '92xyz abcde' format, where 92 is the operator code for Tata Indicom, xyz is the circle code and abcde is the customer's phone number.

Tata Teleservices has lined up an information blitz that includes personalised SMS, advertisements in leading media, through sales channels, call centres and interactive voice response (IVR).

To make the transition smooth, Tata Indicom has allowed free call forward from the old eight-digit number to the new 10 digit one for one month.

Also, those who send SMS to the eight-digit number will receive an SMS informing them about the new number.
