Tata Motors has reduced prices of its sports utility vehicle (SUV) Safari. Although the Tata Motors spokesperson declined to comment, industry sources said the price reduction would be on an average of Rs 1.7 lakh. |
Sources close to the company said the price slash was on account of the cost benefits achieved by the company in the area of component sourcing as well as in operations. |
The price reduction is being done through the launch of new models of Safari. The new variants of the SUV (after reduction) are priced in the range of Rs 6.4 lakh to Rs 8 lakh. |
Other companies in this segment are not likely to respond to the price cut. Rajesh Jejurikar, executive vice-president, sales & marketing, Mahindra & Mahindra, which produces Scorpio, said, "The price cut by Tata Motors is not going to impact M&M as our customers are more value conscious. There is no plan to slash the prices of Scorpio." |
"The Safari range benefits from the result of an aggressive cost-reduction plan, which has been undertaken by the company as part of its business plans," the company said in a media release. |
"This is probably for the first time that a passenger carmaker in the country has slashed its product prices to this extent. The cut will surely trigger price slides in the industry," said a Mumbai-based auto analyst. |
The new models are available in three engine options - 90PS Turbo Charged Inter-cooled (TCIC) diesel, 115PS Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) diesel, and 127PS Multi-point Fuel Injection (MPFI) petrol. |
The entry-level TCIC offering is available at a price point of Rs 6.4 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The Safari DICOR range starts at Rs 6.99 lakh and Safari petrol at Rs 7.99 lakh. |
The top-end versions of the Safari have ABS, dual Airbags, reverse guide system and DVD/MP3 system with dual LCD screens as standard fitment, besides a host of luxury, comfort and entertainment features. |
Since its launch in 1998, Tata Motors has sold 4,692 units of the SUV, 48 per cent more than the previous financial year. |
