Tata Motors sales up 41% in May

Automaker Tata Motors today reported a 41.26 per cent increase in sales in May at 56,779 units compared to the same month last year.

The company had sold 40,196 units in May 2009, Tata Motors said in a statement.

The homegrown auto major's domestic sales grew by 37.53 per cent in the month at 52,801 units against 38,392 units in the same month last year.

Its passenger vehicles sales in the domestic market stood at 31,475 units in May against 23,004 units in the same month of 2009, an increase of 36.82 per cent, the company said.

The company's exports jumped over twofold at 3,978 units over 1,804 units, it added.

Sales of Indica, however, fell by 15 per cent to 8,468 units over May 2009, Tata Motors said.

The Indigo family recorded sale of 6,600, a rise of over twofold over the same month last year. The Sumo and Safari accounted for sales of 2,708 units, an increase of 6 per cent compared to the same month last year.

In the commercial vehicles segment, domestic sales were at 31,475 units compared with 23,004 units, up 36.82 per cent, while light commercial vehicle sales during the reporting month were at 17,615 units, a growth of 22 per cent over last year, and medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales stood at 27,017 units, a growth of 62 per cent compared with May 2009.
