Tata Motors has decided to set up its manufacturing unit at Dharwad and the state government has taken steps to allot 300 acres of land adjacent to the Telcon on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway,10 kms off Dharwad.

Secretary in-charge of Dharwad district M K Shivakumar told reporters here on Friday that the setting up of Tata Motors would help provide direct employment to 10,00 people while another 20,00 would be indirectly employed. In addition, it cost the industrial activity in the region with several ancillary industries coming up.

Kumar said the land required for Tata Motors was available with the KAIDB and there was no need for acquiring land afresh from the farmers for the purpose.

The Rs 2,100 crore project is expected to manufacture 30,000 buses every year. Tatas have shown interest and the process of allotting the land would be completed soon, he informed.

While the ITôBT sectors provided employment to people from upper strata, the manufacturing industries catered to the employment needs of low and middle-income people. He said the government aimed at developing Dharwad as the automobile hub.
