Tata Power is upgrading its transmission network in Mumbai which allow the existing lines to to carry more power to the city.
"We have initiated the augmentation of 220 kV Kalwa-Salsette line number 4 and will replace existing conductor with high ampacity conductor . We hope to complete the work by November," Arvind Singh, head of transmission of Tata Power said today.
In April it augmented Kalwa-Salsette line number 3 and together the upgrade of the both the lines will enable carriage of 600 MW of extra power into Mumbai.
The city has peak demand of about 3600 MW which is sourced by Tata Power, Reliance Infra and Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company.
Following a massive power outage last September a state government committee headed by then energy secretary Ajoy Mehta had noted that had the power utilities completed the transmission network upgrade in Greater Mumbai in a time-bound manner, it would have helped power evacuation from other parts of the state and country.
Further, the committee, which has sourced the necessary backup data from the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC), has made a strong case for power generation capacity addition to meet the increasing demand in the city and also exploring options such as roof top solar projects and power generation based on solid waste management.
