The efforts of Tata Steel, planning to set up a 6 million tonne integrated steel project at Kalinganagar, to better the quality of life of the rehabilitated families, known as Tata Steel Paribar, in Jajpur district has started yielding results.

The company is implementing a three pronged strategy to provide employment opportunities to the relocated families.

Subsequent to the socio-economic survey and its findings in the project area, Tata Steel has taken up a detailed plan for enhancing skills and engagement opportunities for the members of rehabilitated families.

Though the Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) policy of the Orissa government provides for employment for one member of each displaced family, the company has gone one step ahead by agreeing to provide R&R facilities along with employment opportunity to each major member (above 18 years by 1 January 2005) of a house.

This initiative has resulted in increase in the number of families eligible to get R&R facilities along with employment opportunity from 562 core families to 1195 families. So quantified, on an average, two members per displaced family will get employment opportunity in the company.

Besides, the company is investing around Rs 1 lakh (on an average) per member of Tata Steel Paribar for their skill up-gradation in technologies. This is in addition to the 100 percent scholarship provided by Tata Steel in disciplines like engineering, medicine and other professional courses.

It may be noted, about 30 boys and girls in Kalinganagar area have benefitted from the Tata Steel Paribar scholarship scheme.
