Tata Steel doubles profit to Rs 890 cr

Buoyant steel demand and firm prices have doubled Tata Iron and Steel Company's net profit for the third quarter.
 
The steel company's net profit zoomed by 99 per cent to Rs 890.51 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2004, compared with a net profit of Rs 447.17 crore, recorded in the corresponding period last year.
 
For the nine month period ended December 31, 2004, its net profit increased by 129.61 per cent "" from Rs 1,117.34 crore to Rs 2,565.58 crore.
 
Net sales increased 41.75 per cent to Rs 10,634.30 crore during the first nine months of 2004-05 as against Rs 7,502.12 crore in the same period of 2003-04.
 
Net sales for the quarter increased 41.76 per cent to Rs 3,731.29 crore, against net sales of Rs 2,632.03 crore, registered for the three months ended December 31, 2003. Other income increased from Rs 26.24 crore to Rs 33.80 during the third quarter of 2004-05.
 
B Muthuraman, managing director, of Tata Steel said, "The steel demand in the third quarter was very robust and therefore prices remained firm. Besides, our profitability has improved due to a better product mix and increase of branded products."
 
During the third quarter of 2004-05, the company sold 9.97 lakh tonne of steel, against 9.83 lakh tones in the third quarter of 2003-04. Exports stood at Rs 502.69 crore, compared with Rs 358.53 crore in the three-month period ended December 31, 2003.
 
Operating profit of the company increased from Rs 880.45 crore to Rs 1,571.55 crore during the third quarter of 2004-05.
 
Interest outgo was down from Rs 59.71 crore to Rs 80.93 crore in the quarter period ended December 31, 2004. Total expenditure increased to 2,159.74 crore from Rs 1,751.58 crore on account of plant shut downs for maintenance and repairs.
 
"Our G blast furnace at Jamshedpur has been closed since December for upgradation. The blast furnace will be operational from March, with an increased capacity of 1.8 million tonne per annum, compared with its erstwhile capacity of 1.2 million tonne per annum," Muthuraman said.
