Tata Steel KZN today commenced construction of its ambitious ferrochrome plant in South Africa, aiming to expand its presence in that country.The ceremony, which took place at Alton North Area of KwaZulu-Natal, the largest port city in South Africa, was witnessed by South African Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, a release said here.The 670 million South African rand plant, scheduled to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2007, will create around 1,000 jobs during the construction and 130 permanent jobs on commencement of operations, it added."The high carbon ferrochrome plant would be the cleanest in the world with state-of-the-art production processes," Tata Steel Managing Director B Muthuraman said.The plant will produce 1,35,000 tonne high carbon ferrochrome a year, during the first phase, using ore imported from India and Iran.
