Out of two coke oven batteries built in the steel mill complex, one battery with 1.5 million tonne capacity has gone on stream. The heating process of this coke oven battery was started in May.
The construction of the second coke over battery, with same capacity, is also near complete and its heating process will start soon, sources said.
Coke oven is a key component of the steel mill and coke produced there is charged with iron ore in the blast furnace to produce hot metal.
The coke produced at the unit will be stacked up for use later when the blast furnace of the steel mill becomes operational, sources added.
The coke oven operation has started after receiving Consent to Operate (CTO) from the state pollution control board last week.
At present, the company is using imported coal in its coke oven, which is hauled to the plant through the railway siding of neighbouring Mesco plant pending completion of work on the company’s own rail siding.
Apart from coke oven, the plant has received consent to operate the first unit of its Captive Power Plant and a 40 Mw DG set, said an pollution board official.
