Tata Steel and SAIL have bettered their rankings in list of top 25 global producers of the metal in 2012 to stand at 11th and 24th positions, respectively, according to data prepared by World Steel Association (WSA).

With 23 MT production, Tata Steel positioned itself in the 11th rank along with Chinese steel maker Shandong Group in the year. In 2011, Tata Steel had secured the 12th rank with a production of 23.8 MT.

State-owned Steel Authority of India's 13.5 MT production in 2012 got it the 24th rank, two notches above its previous year's ranking of 26th. SAIL had the same output of steel in 2011, WSA has said in the report released yesterday.

The rankings of the two may be even better in the current year as both of them are adding capacities. Tata Steel has recently implemented three million tonnes per annum (mtpa) brown-field expansion at Jamshedpur taking the plant capacity to 10 mtpa.

SAIL is also in the process of hiking its capacity by 5 million tonne to 19 MT in the current fiscal.

Meanwhile, world's steel production rose to 1,547 MT in 2012 from 1,536 MT in 2011. NRI billionaire L N Mittal-led ArcelorMittal was the largest producer of the metal at 93.6 MT in 2012, down from 97.2 MT in the previous year.

Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Coporation, the entity which was merged between the two Japanese majors in October 2012, grabbed the second position replacing Hebei Group. Hebei got the third rank in 2012 from the second position a year earlier.

Baosteel and Posco retained their fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
