Tata Steel has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nippon Steel Corporation (NSC) of Japan for its proposed 6 million tonne per annum steel plant in Kalinganagar, in Jajpur district of Orissa.

Under the agreement, NSC will provide technical assistance to Tata Steel, which will ensure the selection of the most appropriate facility in planning and layout of the proposed steel plant.

According to B Muthuraman, managing director, Tata Steel, the company chose to partner with Nippon Steel as it is the best steel technology company in the world.

H Shima, managing director, NSC, said the company is happy to collaborate with Tata Steel because it is the topmost steel technology company in India and also because of its rich experience in steel making since the turn of the century.

Tata Steel has partnered with NSC in the recent past for the 1 million tonne and 2.4 million tonne growth plans and the cold rolling (CR) mill in its Jamshedpur steel works in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Bhaskar Chatterjee, principal secretary, steel and mines department, Government of Orissa, said Orissa, while carrying forward the dreams of its former chief minister, has today signed 37 MoUs for setting steel plants.

He was confident that Tata Steel's Kalinganagar project will be a showcase for the industry in Orissa and the collaboration between Tata Steel and NSC would be immensely successful, which would eventually result in the progress and prosperity of the people in the region.

Meanwhile, Tata steel has started the construction of boundary wall around its steel plant site at Kalinganagar. It has deposited Rs 68 crore with Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) towards acquisition of 2,400-acre land for the project.
