Tatas plan clinic, more projects in the east

The Tata group has decided to set up a cancer hospital in Kolkata, in alliance with the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. This will be the first hospital outside Mumbai from the group, apart from the smaller ones for captive use.
 
Ratan N Tata announced the group's decision at the Tata Tea annual general meeting. He said that the group had not done enough for the region and hence the initiative to set up the hospital, as part of centenary celebrations.
 
Moreover, Tata Tea shareholders had also requested Tata to set up such a hospital.
 
At present, the feasibility study was being done and the plan would be finalised in the next few months.
 
Speaking on the sidelines of Tata Tea's annual general meeting, Tata said "We are looking for alliance with Tata Memorial Hospital. The whole purpose is that if cancer is detected early, it will save many lives. In the next few months, we will finalise the plan."
 
The group was also planning to enhance its investments in the state. Tata said, he had give assurances to chief minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya that the group would make further investments in West Bengal.
 
Tata said that the chief minister had requested him to explore possibilities in automotive and automotive components sector and the group would examine prospects.
 
He however clarified that the investment could by in any sector, which made sense. "If it makes sense to invest in the automotive sector, we will invest" he said.
 
Another proposed group investment in the state was the coke plant planned by Tata Steel in Haldia. The project would be in partnership with West Bengal Industrial and Development Corporation (WBIDC).
 
The group is a major employer in the information technology sector in the state.
 
The Tata Consultancy Service development centre at Kolkata's Salt Lake employed around 2500 people as of now and was was planning to nearly double the headcount in the near future.
 
The Tata group also had steel and bearing units at Kharagpur in the state under the Tata Steel umbrella.
