Tatra Trucks India, the Indian truck manufacturing operations of the UK based Vectra Group, announced here on Friday the opening of a seat manufacturing facility as a part of their main manufacturing facility in Hosur. The organisation plans to manufacture a range of seats for use in buses, trams and trains, among others. |
Tatra also announced the launch of the first model, Gala, an advanced passenger seating system, which is intended for the luxury bus segment. The seating manufacturing unit has been formed in collaboration with Fabricación Asientos Vehículos Industriales, S.A. (FAINSA) of Spain. |
"An initial investment of euro 2 million will be put in for the seating facility with a capacity of 200,000 units per annum. Following that, with more introduction of models and capacity, we are looking at a progressive investment of around euro 4 million," said Rakesh Jhinsi, Managing Director of Tatra Trucks India. |
He added that close to 50 per cent of the production of seats is meant for the export market. |
"We will be looking at markets like Europe, Latin America and Turkey. Also our collaborator will be buying back some of the produced seats," said Jhinsi. The company expects revenues of Rs 2.5 crore from seat sales each year for the first three years. |
The company, which has been a major manufacturer of off the road trucks for the Indian market, is working on an on-road truck as well and will launch it in about a year's time. |
Though the truck will be intended mainly for the domestic market, Jhinsi said Tatra will be open to exporting it. |
The company's main manufacturing unit, with an installed capacity of 1,000 units per annum, is involved in activities like engine testing, cabin building and vehicle assembly and testing. Rs 30 crore has been invested in the unit already. |
Tatra Trucks registered a turnover of nearly Rs 70 crore last year and hopes to close the current year at Rs 100 crores. Around 15 per cent of truck revenues comes from exports. |
The Vectra Group holds 90 per cent of Tatra Trucks India while the remaining 10 per cent is with Tatra a.s. |
