As part of its latest technology upgrade exercise, the income-tax (I-T) department has selected Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country’s largest information technology (IT) services company, to implement an I-T upgrade project worth Rs 200 crore. The five-year project involves upgrading the entire hardware and software of all the I-T department offices across the country.
Various industry and government sources confirmed TCS had been finalised for the project, called Income Tax Business Applications. However, the contract hasn’t been formally signed yet.
A government official directly involved with the project said, currently, data didn’t move seamlessly from one module of the department to another, as modules added through the last 15 years, including e-filing, central processing centre for returns, and tax deducted at source, used different technology platforms. “Now, we are rebuilding everything and putting everyone under one structure.”
