TeamSustain to generate energy from waste

Talking to Business Standard, George Mathew, vice-president, TeamSustain, said the company was currently initiating a green technologies project in Kochi in the area of waste-energy generation.

"We have roped in the Cochin Chamber of Commerce through a joint venture for effective gasification of bio-degradable waste in Kochi," he said. The project is estimated to incur a cost of Rs 14 crore and would target gasification of 35 tonnes of waste.

Elaborating on the cost estimates, Mathew said of the Rs 14 crore investment, Rs 4 crore will be for the equipment leased by TeamSustain for the project.

An amount of Rs 2 crore will be pumped in by the Cochin Chamber of Commerce and the remaining will be borne by TeamSustain.

The company is also initiating measures to promote more such concepts in green energy technologies and thereby help in cutting down carbon footprint, he added.

TeamSustain has completed over 300 projects in areas such as rural development, sustainable tourism, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, biomass power, small wind, micro hydro and sewage and effluent treatment plants with recovery of energy.

Among them is the solar rural electrification project at Mundanmudi in Idukki district of Kerala, where as many as 400 houses of a single village have been electrified using solar power.

The project, commissioned in 1997, is one of the largest solar rural electrification projects in the world, he said.
