Tega Industries, the Kolkata-based engineering outfit, is looking for acquisitions in South Africa and Brazil to expand its global presence.

The company currently has overseas marketing offices in eight countries and it is one of the leaders in mining equipments in eastern region. Tega currently has a turnover of Rs 200 crore and hopes to touch Rs 300 crore soon.

Madan Mohanka, chairman and managing director Tega India said that the group was planning to have two manufacturing facilities in Africa and Latin America for catering to the mineral-rich lucrative African and Latin American markets.

According to Tega CMD, it had almost finalised the acquisition in South Africa. "The company is called Boruc. It has a manufacturing facility there. It will be an outright acquisition. We shall use this manufacturing facility for catering to the African market," he said.

However, he refused to comment on the size of the acquisition. "We do not want to disclose it now," he added.

But he added that the new company would be called Tega Boruc and the South African outfit has a turnover of close to Rs 60-70 crore.

Mohanka pointed out that it makes sense for Tega to supply the African market from South Africa than from India because of the high logistics cost of mining equipments.

Similarly, the group has initiated discussions with 2-3 outfits in Brazil for a joint venture or outright acquisition. "We hope that the Brazilian venture will be finalised over the next couple of months," he added.

The associate vice president of Tega, S K Dey added that it might divide the overseas market into three verticals. "We shall cater Asia and Asia Pacific markets from India, Latin America from Brazil and Africa and a portion of Europe from South Africa," he added.

Incidentally, the company has offices in Australia, Brazil, Sweden, United States, Canada, South Africa, Ghana and Zambia.

Commenting on domestic operations, Dey said that Tega currently had two domestic manufacturing facilities on the outskirts of Kolkata in Kalyani and Thakurpukur.
