The movies will be made with a budget of Rs 15 lakhs to Rs 4 crore.

Production houses like Bangla Talkies, Moxie Entertainments, Chivach Media, Miracle Films, and Optima Films, have all geared up to make low-to-medium budget movies over the next one year, ranging from adult comedies to relatively innocent romantic comedies that include jokes on adult-related issues.

According to Nitesh Sharma of Bangla Talkies, "Movies like Aamra, which I made last year with a budget of Rs 15 lakhs, had a lot of takers among the urban youth who found it easy to accept the moral and adult issues the film dealt with.

Aamra was classified as a a roller-coaster adult comedy, with its adulterated storyline. Bengali movie-goers have matured to take such jokes and innuendoes sportingly."

Bangla Talkies is now working on more such 'liberated' films like Rangan Chakravarty's 'Bor Ashbe Ekhuni' which has a budget of Rs 75 lakh, and '3X' with a budget of Rs 27 lakh.

According to Arijit Dutta of Priya Entertainments, owner of Priya movie hall in Kolkata, "Just as Bollywood changed from a time when women would always be fully clad in sarees to the kind of item numbers we see today, Tollywood too is undergoing changes.

This is because the current audience likes it like that. Adult issues are no longer taboo and audience does not mind such jokes. The target audience is usually between 14 and 55 years of age. Even in suburbs, adult comedies these days are accepted sportingly."

Moxie Entertainment, after its debut film 'The Bong Connection', has lined up Anjan Dutt's 'BBD', Arindam Nandy's 'Via Darjeeling', and Kaushik Ganguly's 'Brake Fail'.

Moxie Entertainment plans to make movies with a budget of around Rs 4 crore and targets at least 22 per cent returns annually.

Optima Films, at the same time, is planning four 'off-the-cuff' movies with a budget of close to Rs 70 lakh for each.

According to Renu Roy of Optima, "We are targeting the cosmopolitan crowd."

Optima is working with directors like Anjan Dutt for movies like 'Chalo Let's Go'.

Optima had earlier produced 'Unishe April' by Rituparno Ghosh.

Miracle Films, on the other hand, plans to make 'off-beat' movies or hardcore commercial movies, with a budget of Rs 1 crore.

Whether the family audiences finally take to Bengali adult comedies is worth a wait, but the initial response has been positive.
