Top 100 firms held chunk of bank deposits last financial year

In 2004-05, 100 top firms accounted for 91 per cent of the corporate deposits with banks. Of this 100 companies, 27 public sector undertakings (PSUs) from oil, engineering and metals sectors held 53 per cent of the deposits.
 
The study is based on balance sheets of 3,500 companies (accounting for almost 50 per cent of the country's gross domestic product) sourced from Capitalineplus.

The study shows that 3,500 companies held Rs 86,896 crore in term deposits with banks in 2004-05. Of this, top 100 corporates accounted for Rs 79,199 crore, while 27 PSUs held deposits of Rs 46,017 crore. Total deposits of India Inc with banks in 2004-2005 was Rs 1,07,273 crore, of which, Rs 86,896 crore was term deposits and Rs 20,378 crore was balance with banks. Term deposits of corporates with banks have been rising over the last couple of years: 38.30 per cent in 2003-04 and 63.52 per cent in 2004-05.
 
The overall bank deposits of the 3,500 firms increased by Rs 18,168 crore in 2003-04 and Rs 41,671 crore in 2004-05. Term deposits accounted for 16,185 crore in 2003-04 and Rs 36,103 crore in 2004-05. In fact, the share of corporate deposits in the total deposits with banks is also on the rise. From 3.58 per cent of the total deposits of Rs 13,24,899 with banks in 2002-03, the figure rose to 4.26 per cent of the total deposits of Rs 15, 39,256 in 2003-04 and further to 5.94 per cent of the total deposits of Rs 18,05,532 crore in 2004-05.
 
The share of corporate sector in the incremental deposits with banks increased from 7.55 per cent in 2003-04 to 13.56 per cent in 2004-05.
