Toyota India launches Camry's updated versions

The updated hybrid version of the sedan priced at Rs 31.92 lakh

Japanese carmaker Toyota on Thursday launched updated versions of its sedan, Camry, in India, priced up to Rs 31.92 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

A sedan is a car with four doors and a boot (space at the back for carrying things) which is separated from the part where the driver and passengers sit. The company, which is present in the Indian market through a joint venture with the Kirloskar Group - Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) - on Thursday introduced an updated hybrid version of the sedan priced at Rs 31.92 lakh. It launched an updated version of the petrol-powered Camry at Rs 28.8 lakh.

"We have sold more than 8,000 Camrys since launch," TKM Managing Director Naomi Ishii said.

There is an increased awareness and acceptance of hybrid in the Indian market, he added.

At present, hybrid version constitutes 73 per cent of total Camry sales in the country, Ishii said.

The company had first launched petrol powered Camry in India in 2002. In 2012 it started local manufacturing of the car.

Camry hybrid version was introduced in the country a year later in 2013.

Toyota, the world's largest automaker by volume, is making a strategic shift in India, focusing on safety and taking a premium position in each of the segment it is present rather than chasing numbers.

The company has started offering airbags as standard across all its models sold in the country since the beginning of the year.
