Japanese auto maker Toyota has called back a staggering 1.13 million compact cars in the US due to engine problems, pushing the total number of recalls by the company in the last 10 months to nearly 11 million vehicles worldwide.

The US arm of the group, Toyota Motor Sales Inc has recalled about 1.13 million Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles (Model Year 2005-2008) sold in the US.

The recall has been made "to address some Engine Control Modules (ECM) that may have been improperly manufactured", the company said in a statement.

Toyota has been facing public ire related to quality and reliability of its vehicles in the past several months.

This is the 15th recall made this year by the company, which has called back about 11 million vehicles worldwide since November.

Out of the total vehicles recalled by Toyota, 8 million were in connection with complaints about accelerator pedals and floor mats.

"This recall is an example of our commitment to standing by our products and being responsive to our customers. Our goal is to help ensure that Toyota drivers are completely confident in the safety and reliability of their vehicles," Toyota Chief Quality Officer for North America Steve St Angelo said.

As part of the recall, the ECM on involved vehicles will be replaced at no charge to the owner.

Beginning in mid-September 2010, Toyota would mail an interim notification to advise owners of this recall and a future notice when parts become available to complete the repairs, the statement said.

Owners, who have previously paid for replacement of the ECM to address this specific condition should refer to the owner letter for reimbursement consideration instructions, it added.
