TVS Motor Company Limited has kicked-off the soft launch of its new economy segment motorcycle " Star " in Tamil Nadu through local meets organised by its dealers.

At a launch event in Chennai on Wednesday, a TVS Motor official told Business Standard that the aim was to carry out ground level promotion in order to help the customers get a better idea of the product.

'Star' competes with Bajaj Auto's 'Boxer' and Hero Honda's 'CD Dawn' in the economy segment. The TVS official said that the company aims at capturing about 30-35 per cent of the marketshare in Tamil Nadu for economy segment motorcycles in the near future.

"The vehicle has been designed with ruggedness and stability as terms of references. The rural market is expected to be an important segment for the company," he added.

Star's Tamil Nadu launch was preceded by its launch in North India. A press release issued by Prabha TVS, the Chennai dealership which sponsored the soft launch, said that over 50,000 units of the motorcycle have been sold so far.

The 100-cc , four-stroke Star's on-road price in Chennai is Rs 35,400.
