The tyre industry saw a 6.4 per cent drop in output in April 2001. Total production stood at 33.15 lakh tyres compared with 35.41 lakh tyres in April 2000.
As per data released today by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association of India (ATMA), all key segments such as car, scooter and tractor tyres witnessed negative growth in production in April 2001, compared with the same month last year. However, tyre exports jumped up by 33 per cent during April 2001 to 1.91 lakh units against 1.44 lakh units in the year-ago month.
Sales of cars, commercial vehicles, two-wheelers, multi-utility-vehicles and three-wheelers had also recorded a dip in sales during April, the first month of the current financial year.

In line with the vehicle sales, production of car tyres declined by 2.6 per cent in April to 5.87 lakh units compared with 6.03 lakh units while that of tractor tyres skidded by 9.9 per cent at 1.75 lakh units over 1.95 lakh units in April 2000.
Truck and bus tyre production witnessed a marginal 1.2 per cent rise at 7.29 lakh units against 7.20 lakh units produced in April 2000.
Production of motorcycle and moped tyres, however, went up by 2.4 per cent and 3.4 per cent at 8.98 lakh units and 9,688 units during April 2001. In the case of light commercial vehicle (LCV) tyres, production increased by 15.6 per cent at 1.74 lakh units as against 1.51 lakh units produced in the year-ago month.
Tyres for jeeps recorded a 10 per cent decline to 85,239 units during the month under review. Production of animal drawn vehicles (ADV) and industrial tyres fell by 8 per cent and 10 per cent at 37,537 units and 16,854 units in April 2001. For off-the-road vehicles, tyre production increased by 42 per cent at 3,316 units.
