UBM India, which organises about 30 exhibitions across portfolios and geographies in India, today inaugurated the sixth edition of Hyderabad Jewellery, Pearl and Gem Fair (HJF), where 150 companies are showcasing around 200 brands. Around Rs 20 crore worth of jewellery will be on display during the two-day event. The total gem and jewellery exports reached $39 billion in India during the last financial year. According to the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, this is expected to grow at 12-15 per cent during the current fiscal.
Inaugurating the expo, Union minister of state for commerce and industry, Daggubati Purandeswari, said the state government should be proactive in setting up infrastructure in Tier-II and III cities to facilitate such events and promote business.
On the Reserve Bank of India's recent measures to curb gold imports, the minister said the gold and jewellery trade had submitted a memorandum requesting to relax the curbs. "I will take up the issue with the Union finance ministry," she said.
